Bermuda Hay/Seed

Bermudagrass is a perennial crop that is grown and harvested by Freddi Abatti Companies in the Imperial Valley, CA. Because Imperial Valley is in the lower desert, our growing season is longer to allow us to grow both Bermuda Hay and Bermuda Seed with the resulting Bermuda Straw.

The increasing demand in both the domestic and export markets makes our high-quality Bermuda Hay a popular feed option for livestock. This forage is known to retain its protein content during the winter and can be used as a deferred feed. We produce both Big 3X4 bales and small 3-twine bales that can be fed to horses, sheep, lactating ewes, llamas, alpacas and camels.

Freddi Abatti Companies also grow Bermuda Seed, which is known to germinate quickly and result in Bermudagrass which is one of the most persistent and aggressive grasses grown in a variety of soils and is very hard to kill once established. Bermudagrass has a fair degree of salt spray tolerance and is a primary turfgrass for much of the temperate and tropical world.

Our “Common” Bermuda Seed is drought resistant, full sun, fast growing, fast germinating, easy to establish and is sold for both the domestic and export markets. In the domestic market, our Bermuda Seed is used for forage pasture, professional sports fields, parks and households. In the export markets, it is used for forage pasture, water shed management at highways and dam construction projects.

“Common” Bermuda Seed is sold in both hulled and un-hulled seeds. Hulled Bermuda Seed has the husk removed, which allows for faster germination. Un-hulled Bermuda Seed keeps its natural husk, and results in delayed germination. The delayed germination is nature’s mechanism to wait for better conditions for germination to ensure a species’ survival. With good growing conditions, hulled Bermuda Seed leads to quicker establishment of forage pasture or lawn. Although the markets demand more hulled Bermuda Seed versus un-hulled Bermuda Seed, Freddi Abatti Companies can provide our customers with both hulled and un-hulled Bermuda Seed.
